Director Destin Daniel Cretton confirms PlayStation's Spider-Man games inspired the upcoming "Brand New Day" film.
The director of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" revealed that the PlayStation "Spider-Man" games were a major source of inspiration for the upcoming movie. Destin Daniel Cretton specifically acknowledged that "Marvel’s Spider-Man" and "Marvel’s Spider-Man 2" influenced various shots and scenes throughout the film. This influence extends beyond the comics, which were already a significant factor in the movie's creative direction.
Cretton, who admitted he isn't a frequent gamer himself, relied on his crew's expertise. Many members of the "Brand New Day" team were avid fans of the Insomniac Games series. They actively contributed to the film's development by bringing in screenshots and videos from the games, pitching ideas to Cretton for potential recreation on the big screen.
The director elaborated on this collaborative process, stating, "I am not a gamer, but I’ve played the game, [and] I surrounded myself with people who were obsessive gamers." He added that stunt department members would often provide "screen grabs of their play and bring it in and say like, 'Can we pull this move off?'" highlighting the direct impact on the film's action sequences.
The inspiration is now reciprocal, as "Marvel’s Spider-Man 2" will receive a new update on July 28th, introducing the "Fresh Start" suit. This in-game costume mirrors Peter Parker's appearance in the "Brand New Day" movie, adding another film-inspired look to the game's collection for PS5 and PC players.
"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" is scheduled to premiere in theaters on July 31st. Meanwhile, Insomniac Games is expected to develop "Marvel’s Spider-Man 3" following the success of its predecessors. Before that, the studio's next title, "Marvel’s Wolverine," is slated for release on PS5 in September.
