Mickey Zacchilli breaks her creative silence with GAR, a new comic series aiming for a rapid monthly release.
Mickey Zacchilli has launched GAR, her first major comic in years, marking a significant return for the acclaimed artist. This new series is already generating buzz, with Zacchilli committing to an ambitious monthly release schedule, a pace she hopes will re-establish her presence in the underground comics scene and bring her unique style to new audiences.
Zacchilli's break from comics followed a challenging period, including a move to New York in 2019 that was cut short by the 2020 pandemic. After months of isolation, she returned to Rhode Island, finding it difficult to reignite her creative flow. The initial chapter of GAR alone took a full year to complete as she worked through being out of practice.
Before her hiatus, Zacchilli was a prolific force in the Providence art scene, known for chaotic screen-printed posters, her Price Tapes label, COOL DOG stickers, and numerous comics. She was also instrumental in popularizing Risography, a printmaking medium that has since become an industry standard, though much of her early work remains undocumented and rare.
Now back in rhythm, Zacchilli is producing 30 pages of GAR every 30 days, a pace directly inspired by manga production. While she describes the first chapter as feeling "stiff," she confirms a loosely mapped-out story arc for the series. GAR is designed to be a "total blast to read," aiming to captivate both long-time followers and new readers alike.
