Bruce Campbell has announced his retirement from portraying Ash Williams, signaling the end of his iconic four-decade run.
Bruce Campbell has confirmed his definitive departure from the role of Ash Williams, the chainsaw-wielding hero of the Evil Dead franchise. The actor stated, "Ash is done," and further clarified that he would not be engaging in any animated voice work for the character, directly addressing long-standing rumors of a potential animated revival. This marks a significant turning point for the beloved horror icon.
Campbell’s tenure as Ash began in 1981 with Sam Raimi’s original The Evil Dead, continuing through Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness. He later resurrected the character for Starz’s Ash vs Evil Dead, a three-season series that concluded in 2018. Despite critical acclaim, the show faced low ratings, leading to its cancellation and Campbell’s subsequent step back from live-action appearances.
Beyond his on-screen performances, Campbell has been a consistent creative force, serving as a producer on most Evil Dead films and influencing the overarching narrative. His commitment extended to voice work, lending Ash’s distinct voice to video games like Dead by Daylight in 2019 and Evil Dead: The Game in 2022, and even a cameo in 2023’s Evil Dead Rise. This extensive involvement underscores his deep connection to the character.
While Campbell’s era as Ash concludes, the Evil Dead franchise itself continues to thrive. A new interconnected film trilogy commenced with 2023’s Evil Dead Rise, followed by this summer’s Evil Dead Burn, and will extend with Evil Dead Wrath, a prequel from director Francis Galluppi slated for 2028. Both Rise and Burn achieved box office success and critical praise, demonstrating the franchise’s vitality under new creative visions.
