Casting Director Backs David Jonsson as New Black Panther

David Jonsson is officially cast as the new Black Panther, set to debut in the 2028 film Black Panther 3. The announcement, made at San Diego Comic Con, confirms Jonsson will portray Prince T’Challa, son of the original King T’Challa, taking on the iconic heroic mantle. This significant casting decision has already garnered strong support from within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The role of Black Panther carries immense legacy, first brought to global acclaim by Chadwick Boseman, who tragically passed in 2020. Following Boseman’s death, Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, assumed the title in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Jonsson now steps into these formidable shoes, with endorsements from Wright, M’Baku actor Winston Duke, and other key MCU figures.

Adding a powerful voice to this chorus of support is Marvel Casting Director Sarah Finn, often considered a secret weapon behind the MCU’s success. In a recent interview, Finn unequivocally endorsed Jonsson, emphasizing her understanding of the role's profound significance. Her backing highlights the meticulous process behind selecting actors for such pivotal, beloved characters.

Finn praised Jonsson’s qualities, stating, "He has a lot of talent and a lot of heart. Obviously, these are very big shoes to fill…We needed somebody not only with the talent but with a certain presence and a certain spirit." She also referred to Jonsson’s Prince T’Challa as the "heir apparent," hinting at potential plotlines where claiming the Wakandan throne proves complex.

Beyond the Black Panther casting, Finn also commented on Ryan Gosling joining the MCU as Ghost Rider, another reveal from this year’s San Diego Comic Con. She noted Gosling’s public desire for the role, remarking, "Ryan is very public about saying that he wanted to play this character, so there wasn’t a lot of heavy lifting…The reaction was beautiful to witness." Both films are slated for 2028 releases.
