The original Darkest Dungeon gets 'The Fire's Edge,' a new DLC bringing characters from its acclaimed sequel.
Red Hook Studios has unveiled 'The Fire's Edge,' a surprise new DLC for the original Darkest Dungeon, marking its first expansion in six years. Set to launch on August 18th for PC, Mac, and consoles, this update celebrates the game's 10-year anniversary by injecting fresh content and familiar faces from its 2023 sequel, Darkest Dungeon 2, into the acclaimed roguelike RPG.
Darkest Dungeon, which debuted a decade ago, quickly became a hit with its unique dungeon-crawling roguelike mechanics, engaging character classes, and challenging turn-based combat. While Red Hook has since released a handful of DLCs and the full sequel, development for the original game had paused. This new expansion breaks a six-year silence, reigniting interest in the foundational title.
The Fire's Edge introduces two playable characters directly from Darkest Dungeon 2: The Duelist and The Runaway. These additions promise to bring new combat mechanics and strategic depth to the original game. Beyond characters, players will discover three new districts, a variety of Trinkets, and additional tools, alongside the popular 'Burn' mechanic, further diversifying gameplay possibilities.
This fifth DLC for Darkest Dungeon aims to revitalize the 10-year-old title, offering both veterans and newcomers compelling reasons to delve back into its punishing dungeons. It also serves as an intriguing preview of some mechanics for those considering Darkest Dungeon 2. The expansion will be available on PC, Mac, PlayStation, and Nintendo platforms, with an Xbox version slated for a later release.
