DC is bringing one of Batman's most legendary comic sagas, Knightfall, to animation as an ambitious three-part movie event. This sprawling crossover, originally published in the early 1990s, profoundly changed the Dark Knight's world, introducing Bane as a formidable adversary and pushing Bruce Wayne beyond his physical and psychological limits, ultimately breaking Batman.
Rather than compressing the enormous saga into a single film, Warner Bros. Animation and DC are adapting it as a meticulously structured three-part series. The films are built around the original Knightfall saga's major chapters: Knightfall, Knightquest, and KnightsEnd, mirroring the comic's own three-part structure that DC's collected editions have preserved.
The narrative begins with Bane's calculated plan to free Batman's entire rogue's gallery from Arkham Asylum, transforming Gotham into a relentless battlefield. Batman is forced into a grueling gauntlet, confronting one dangerous criminal after another without respite. This strategic exhaustion is Bane's true weapon, pushing the Caped Crusader to his mental and physical breaking point before their inevitable confrontation.
The legendary moment arrives when Bane, having meticulously engineered Batman's defeat, breaks Bruce Wayne's back, fundamentally altering the mythos. With Bruce incapacitated, Gotham still needs a protector, leading to the controversial introduction of Jean-Paul Valley, known as Azrael. He assumes the mantle, but his increasingly aggressive and violent methods challenge Bruce's established rules, raising questions about Gotham's new Dark Knight.
The first film, Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall, digitally arrived on August 25, 2026, with its physical release scheduled for September 8. Anson Mount stars as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Michael Mando as Bane, and Pablo Schreiber as Jean-Paul Valley/Azrael. Jeff Wamester directs from a screenplay by Jeremy Adams, setting the stage for Part Two later in 2026 and Part Three in early 2027.
