San Diego Comic-Con displays for Avengers: Doomsday hint at Doctor Doom gaining Thanos-level power through unique Latverian Witches.
The first teaser trailer for Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday recently arrived, showcasing the MCU’s heroes meeting the X-Men and Robert Downey Jr.’s villain defeating Thor with minimal effort. Ahead of their San Diego Comic-Con panel, Marvel Studios has also been revealing screen-used costumes, including a “Latverian Witch” outfit that has been swapped daily with different colored robes.
Initially, the green-robed Latverian Witch sparked theories of an alternate-universe Scarlet Witch. However, subsequent reveals of orange and purple robes on Thursday and Friday suggest a deeper connection. These three colors correspond to three of the six Infinity Stones, leading to speculation that the Latverian Witches could be Doctor Doom’s unique version of the powerful artifacts, or perhaps their keepers.
This theory aligns with previous MCU lore, as the Loki series confirmed that Infinity Stones vary across universes and are useless outside their native reality. Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers & New Avengers comics, which heavily influence Doomsday’s incursion storyline, also depicted Infinity Stones as non-gem objects like panes of glass or chain links. Doom’s use of witches as magical servants would be a fitting display of his immense power.
With Avengers: Doomsday serving as the final film before Avengers: Secret Wars, fans anticipate an ending that establishes the status quo for the latter. Many expect the appearance of “God Emperor Doom” and a cinematic encounter with Thanos, where Doom could solidify his place as a major villain by demonstrating his superiority, even over the Mad Titan.
The film’s incursions storyline, drawing from comic arcs like “Time Runs Out” and “A Perfect World,” suggests Doom’s magical abilities will be paramount. As his own universe faces peril, a powerful display of force against other realities, potentially involving the Fox X-Men characters, will be required. Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18th.
