Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball Daima, his last major contribution to the franchise, has received its final U.S. home video release.
The complete Dragon Ball Daima anime series, Akira Toriyama's final creative endeavor, is now available on Blu-ray and DVD for fans in the United States. Released on August 14th, this home video package includes all episodes with English dubbed opening and ending songs, alongside various bonus features. This marks the conclusion of the series' availability for collectors, offering a comprehensive look at Toriyama's last narrative.
Dragon Ball Daima unfolds six months after the climactic Buu Saga, a period when Earth narrowly averted its greatest post-Majin Buu threat. The series notably revitalized the Super Saiyan 3 transformation and officially integrated Super Saiyan 4 into the canon, aligning with Toriyama's vision. His deep involvement extended to the original story, character designs, vehicles, and the overall worldview, making it a significant personal project.
The genesis of Daima traces back approximately seven years, when Toei Animation approached Toriyama with a proposal for a fresh, original concept during the production of Dragon Ball Super: Superhero. This collaboration culminated in an adventure-focused narrative, diverging from a primary emphasis on battles, which premiered in Fall 2024. Its release coincided with the 40th anniversary of the original Dragon Ball manga.
While a direct sequel for Dragon Ball Daima remains unconfirmed, its post-credit scene deliberately leaves narrative avenues open for future exploration. This sequence introduces the concept of additional "third eyes," potent artifacts previously associated with Demon Kings, available at a mysterious vendor of "medi-bugs" and "sky seeds." The origin and power of these items are left unexplained, providing a foundation for potential story expansion.
Concurrently, the Dragon Ball Super manga continues its indefinite hiatus, despite a single chapter release last February. Toyotaro, known for Dragon Ball Heroes: Victory Mission and as the illustrator for Super, is now slated to handle both the story and art for the main manga. Although his return has been teased, a firm schedule for the manga's regular publication remains undisclosed, keeping fans in anticipation.
In related news, Toei Animation has confirmed upcoming projects for the broader Dragon Ball franchise. These include a sequel season titled Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol, which will continue the animated narrative. Additionally, a remake film is in development, set to revisit Goku's iconic confrontation with Beerus, offering a fresh perspective on a pivotal moment in the series' history.
