Iron Man (Vol. 7) #8 features the return of both Anton Vanko and the original Whiplash, Marco Scarlotti.
Iron Man (Vol. 7) #8 delivers a significant surprise, reintroducing not one, but two versions of the classic villain Whiplash. Writer Joshua Williamson and artist Carmen Carnero bring back Anton Vanko, the modern iteration, who attacks the Vault to free a mysterious figure. The issue culminates in the reveal that Vanko's employer is none other than Marco Scarlotti, the original Whiplash.
Anton Vanko, introduced in 2009, became Whiplash after an Iron Man imposter killed his father. Believing Tony Stark was responsible, Vanko vowed revenge, using stolen chest plate technology to create his signature energy whips. Though he later learned the truth, his hatred for Iron Man persists, fueling his relentless mission to destroy Stark's legacy.
Marco Scarlotti, the very first Whiplash, originally worked with the Maggia, infiltrating Stark factories to develop his energy whips. Despite multiple prison stints and tech upgrades, he consistently lost to Iron Man. Scarlotti was previously killed by a sentient Iron Man armor but has since returned, driven by a profound desire for vengeance against the hero who ruined his life.
This double return highlights Joshua Williamson's commitment to revitalizing Iron Man's classic rogues' gallery, focusing on their deep-seated hatred for Tony Stark. With Stark now running a school for geniuses, building a new relationship, and Pepper Potts back in his life, he has more to lose than ever. Facing two Whiplashes, united by their burning animosity, presents a vintage Iron Man challenge.
