Johnny Depp made an unexpected appearance at San Diego Comic-Con, fully immersed in the character of Ebenezer Scrooge. He arrived in period costume at an 1880s British Christmas village, a Paramount Pictures installation in the Gaslamp district, to promote Ti West’s upcoming film, Ebenezer.
This marks Depp’s first Comic-Con presence since 2018, when he attended as Gellert Grindelwald for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. His brief, yet complete, portrayal of Scrooge, which included a grumbling interaction about fair wages, was met with enthusiasm from fans, many of whom declared his return to the cinematic stage.
The film, an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, is set to release on November 13th. It represents Depp’s first major role in several years, following a period of personal and legal challenges. His commitment to the character at the event suggests a renewed focus on his craft.
Ti West’s Ebenezer boasts an ensemble cast alongside Depp, featuring notable talents such as Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, and Ian McKellen.
