In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Bernthal's Punisher displayed a surprising paternal dynamic with Peter Parker, evolving from antagonism to a form of affection. This iteration also showcased a lighter, funnier side, leading some to anticipate a softer, more palatable version of the character moving forward. This contrasted with his ruthless depictions in Daredevil: Born Again and The Punisher: One Last Kill.
Bernthal, however, expressed a desire to explore how Frank Castle can "serve" and "honor the dead" through service rather than solely vengeance. He articulated a commitment to the character's inherent unlikability, stating, "There’s nothing about Frank Castle that he’s trying to be likable. There’s nothing about Frank where he’s trying to win over your hearts and minds."
The actor further elaborated on his willingness to "turn my back on the audience, as Frank does," emphasizing a creative freedom to diverge from expected paths. He noted, "As much as I would like to explore a Frank Castle that serves the community and that fights for justice, I also want to be completely willing and open to turning my back on the audience and going the other way with it, too."
