The live-action Gargoyles series, once in development for Disney+, has been officially cancelled.
Greg Weisman, the visionary creator behind the cult animated series Gargoyles, has confirmed the termination of the live-action adaptation previously in development for Disney+. Weisman revealed that Atomic Monster, the production company, held the license to develop the series, but those plans are now definitively dead, marking a significant shift in the project's trajectory.
This cancellation follows a pattern of recent project re-evaluations at Disney+, notably including the Power Rangers franchise reboot, which was also scrapped for the streaming service. These decisions collectively signal a strategic recalibration of Disney+'s content slate, as the platform appears to be paring down its offerings across various beloved franchises.
Reports indicate a broader company-wide priority shift, with Disney+ reportedly holding back on releases under the Marvel and Star Wars umbrellas. The recent D23 event, typically a showcase for upcoming projects, featured a notably reduced slate of new series announcements, further underscoring a more conservative approach to content development.
Despite the live-action setback, the future for an animated Gargoyles revival remains less clear but potentially more promising. Weisman stated he has no information regarding animation plans, though original series star Brent Spiner previously indicated that a new animated series was in the works.
