Insomniac Games has laid out what its Wolverine game actually is, and the shape of it is unusual for a Marvel adaptation: a Logan with no team behind him, no memory to fall back on, and no institution willing to shelter the people he is fighting for.
The game shares a continuity with the studio's Spider-Man titles, set on the alternate Earth designated 1048. The link was seeded well before this: background detail in the last Spider-Man game included Trask Industries signage and mutant-adjacent graffiti, quietly establishing that a mutant world was running in parallel to Peter Parker's.
Logan is two centuries old when the game opens. The healing factor holds the years off his face while the accumulated damage sits underneath, and the studio has framed him as guarded rather than simply gruff, a man who keeps his distance because he has lost too much before, not because he believes he is a danger to anyone near him.
Combat is built around the claws first. The healing factor, heightened senses and the sheer weight of an adamantium skeleton are folded into how he moves, so tracking enemies and pushing through them are meant to feel like distinct mutant abilities rather than menu options.
Most consequentially, the X-Men do not exist yet. In their place is Team X, a covert outfit advancing mutant interests from the shadows and operating on a far looser moral code than anything Xavier's students would sign off on.
Logan's memory is fractured, and recovering it forms a spine of the story without the game becoming an origin. Jean Grey's telepathy is the way in, guiding him through dream-like passages back into a past he cannot reach on his own.
The antagonist is Bolivar Trask, the mind behind the Sentinel programme, reframed here as a billionaire who has turned an effectively unlimited fortune toward eradicating mutants. Alongside his private security force he has contracted the Reavers, the cybernetically augmented mercenaries, giving him reach that no single mutant should be able to match.
Jean is written as someone who grew up outside any institution, working out her powers alone and discovering others like her who could not pass as human. She wants to build the refuge she never had, and that ambition is what eventually puts her in Logan's path.
Their dynamic is deliberately unresolved. The studio has described two damaged people recognising something in each other without yet deciding whether it turns romantic or settles into something closer to kinship, and the game appears content to leave that open for a while.
Team X was assembled decades earlier by Nathaniel Essex, a name that will land instantly for anyone who knows him as Mister Sinister. The roster puts Logan alongside Sabretooth and Mystique, with Sunfire appearing in the tie-in comic. Logan walked away three years before the game opens, though Essex remains one of the few people he extends any trust to at all.
Sabretooth and Mystique both arrive in updated takes on their comic looks, his carrying orange accents and fur, hers pairing the familiar black and white with skull motifs and firearms.
The Hand feature as a second opposing faction, here under Lady Deathstrike, which gives the game another front with its own history against Logan in the source material.
A crossover ties the game to Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, which arrives first. Each unlocks an outfit in the other, including a cel-shaded Logan for the Insomniac game.
