The 2013 film, which starred Brad Pitt as a United Nations investigator, significantly departed from Max Brooks' source novel. The book was structured as a collection of oral histories and survival accounts.
Instead, the movie presented a globe-trotting thriller on a blockbuster scale, focusing on a central mystery to understand the pandemic's origins. It achieved considerable box office success, grossing $540 million worldwide.
