One of the earliest Superman figurines, a 1942 promotional statuette, is set to go up for auction.
Heritage Auctions will begin taking bids for a rare 1942 Superman Brown & Red Promotional "Syroco" Statuette starting August 25th. This 5.5-inch figure, made by Multi Products, Inc., is considered one of the first three-dimensional Superman collectibles ever produced. DC Comics originally distributed these molded wood-composite figures to comic distributors and retailers as promotional items, making them highly sought after by collectors.
With an estimated 100 pieces originally created, the statuette is extremely rare and could become one of the most valuable Superman collectibles. It depicts Superman in his Golden Age form, hands on hips, with a remarkably flowing cape for its age and material. Even minute details like his facial structure and iconic spit curl are clearly visible, confirming its Golden Age representation.
While this brown and red version is rare, an even more coveted blue-and-red color scheme was given to only 10-12 of the original 100 pieces. However, these are highly unlikely to be found, making the brown and red figure the most accessible option for collectors seeking a piece from this historic line. Its creation predates the widespread use of plastic in collectibles, showcasing an impressive feat in detailing for its time.
Unfortunately, this particular statuette is not in pristine condition and is ungraded. It exhibits general wear and tear, deterioration, and was previously snapped at the ankles and glued back together. Despite these flaws, its historical significance as one of the hero's earliest collectibles, released just four years after Superman's debut, ensures its considerable value and potential for a high price at auction.
