The official website for the Sword Art Online anime series revealed the main staff, official title, and a 2028 theatrical premiere for its new original movie.
The official website for the Sword Art Online anime series has announced key creative staff and a 2028 theatrical premiere for a new original film. The movie, officially titled Integral Domaine, will continue the franchise's cinematic output.
The development was announced with a teaser visual and trailer. The film is slated to open in Japanese theaters in 2028, continuing the series' presence on the big screen.
Returning to voice the central characters are Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Kazuto Kirigaya and Haruka Tomatsu as Asuna Yuuki. Their involvement suggests a continuation of the established narrative threads that have defined the series.
The directorial duties for Integral Domaine will be handled by Shingo Adachi, known for his work on Lycoris Recoil. Yumiko Yamamoto, who previously worked on Sword Art Online: Alicization - War of the Underworld, will serve as character designer.
Animation production will be a collaborative effort between A-1 Pictures and the newly formed Psyde Kick Studio. Distribution of the film will be managed by ANIMEC, indicating a focused approach to its release.
This new original film follows the 2017 anime movie Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale, which also featured an original story by creator Reki Kawahara. That film explored themes of augmented reality.
The Sword Art Online franchise is based on Reki Kawahara's light novel series, which has been ongoing since 2009. The source material has spawned multiple anime seasons, films, and other media adaptations.
Integral Domaine's premiere in 2028 places it several years after the conclusion of the Alicization arc's anime adaptation. The exact narrative focus of this original story remains to be seen, though promotional art hints at the Aincrad setting.
