VisionQuest offers a first look at Emily Hampshire as EDITH, the powerful AI from Tony Stark's legacy, now appearing in human form.
Marvel Television's VisionQuest has unveiled the human form of EDITH, the dangerous artificial intelligence from Spider-Man: Far From Home, portrayed by Emily Hampshire. The upcoming eight-episode series, a continuation of WandaVision and Agatha All Along, brings Paul Bettany back as Vision, exploring his internal mindscape where various AIs exist as human avatars within a memory-built mansion.
Empire Magazine's latest issue features images of Hampshire's EDITH, shown sorting through files and alongside fellow AI avatars FRIDAY (Orla Brady), DUM-E (Henry Lewis), and U (Jonathan Sayer). James Spader returns as Ultron, confined within Vision's mind, while James D'Arcy reprises JARVIS. T'Nia Miller is also slated to appear as Jocasta, a character from the comics built as Ultron's bride.
The presence of Ultron and JARVIS within Vision's mind is consistent with his origin, as his synthetic body was initially built by Ultron and later infused with JARVIS's consciousness. However, the inclusion of other AIs like FRIDAY, which replaced JARVIS after Vision's creation, and particularly EDITH, introduces a narrative puzzle. Vision's connection to Stark's network might explain FRIDAY, but EDITH's timeline is more complex.
Tony Stark designed EDITH as a standalone security and defense program, controlling a global satellite array with drone strike capabilities, later given to Peter Parker. This system was central to Spider-Man: Far From Home. EDITH was introduced roughly five years after Vision's death in Avengers: Infinity War. This temporal discrepancy means EDITH should not exist within Vision's mindscape if it runs on literally uploaded AI code, raising questions for the series to address.
The series promises to unravel how these disparate artificial intelligences, particularly the dangerous EDITH, came to reside within Vision's consciousness. Viewers can expect these explanations when VisionQuest premieres on Disney+ on October 14th, continuing the narrative threads established in its predecessors.
