Legendary artist Yoshitaka Amano premiered a trailer for his original anime, ZAN, at Anime Expo. This debut marked a significant moment for Amano, known for his work on Final Fantasy, Angel's Egg, and Vampire Hunter D. The project emerges from his newly established U.S.-based production company, Yoshitaka Amano Inc., signifying a personal venture for the acclaimed creator.
ZAN draws its narrative from Amano's 2010 art book, Deva ZAN, which Dark Horse Manga is set to re-release in 2027. The anime is conceived as a dark fantasy epic, unfolding within Japan's tumultuous Sengoku period. It follows the warrior ZAN through a fierce battle at Azuchi Castle, where a mysterious voice guides him across space and time to confront powerful beasts known as Tropes and their ruler, RIKKA.
ZAN's journey is not merely one of combat; it delves into the warrior's sense of justice as he travels with Uzume and his mechanical familiar, Panther. The production emphasizes a commitment to traditional artistry, with the anime brought to life entirely through hand-drawn animation. This approach underscores a philosophy that "the studio does not create the animation. Creators DO," prioritizing individual craft.
To realize this vision, Amano assembled a distinguished team of animation veterans. Masashi Ikeda (Inuyasha, Gundam Wing) and Tōru Yoshida (Armored Trooper VOTOMS, Gundam SEED) serve as directors of animation. Moriyasu Taniguchi (VOTOMS, Samurai Champloo) is the principal animator, while Ryosuke Takahashi (The Fable) handles series composition.
The writing team includes Yūya Takashima (The Fable, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury), with art direction by Kunio Okawara (Time Bokan, Mobile Suit Gundam) and Minoru Nishida (Kill Bill, Doraemon: Nobita's Dinosaur). This collective represents a significant gathering of talent, many of whom are celebrated figures in the history of anime production.
Amano expressed that ZAN holds a unique significance, being a project he "spontaneously" initiated, unlike previous adaptations where he wasn't the original creator. He views it as a "fresh start," aiming to convey the enduring spirit of ZAN while acknowledging the evolution of techniques over the past decade. His background in animation informs this renewed engagement.
Hiroaki Ikegami, CEO of Yoshitaka Amano Inc., confirmed that the animators joined the project out of admiration for Amano's work. Many of these "legends" had never collaborated directly with Amano during their earlier careers across different studios. Their collective return to work on ZAN represents a unique convergence of seasoned artists. The anime is currently in production.
