Spider-Man: Brand New Day writers confirm Jean Grey did not kill the man she forced into traffic.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers have finally addressed the most significant criticism leveled against Jean Grey's character in the film. The creative team clarified that despite appearances, Jean Grey is not technically responsible for any deaths, specifically the incident where she seemingly forced an innocent man into oncoming traffic.

The controversial scene depicted Jean Grey, played by Sadie Sink, compelling a man to walk into a busy street, an act that sparked widespread debate among viewers. Erik Sommers explained that while the character caused "a lot of destruction and mayhem," the intention was to establish her as a formidable threat. This approach is crucial for a villain who might eventually undergo redemption or transformation.

Despite this clarification, online discourse suggests that many fans remain unconvinced or unwilling to forgive Jean Grey's actions. The incident with the man in traffic, coupled with her extensive use of mind control and other destructive behaviors throughout the movie, has created a difficult path for her character's future acceptance. Her sister Sara's tragic experimentation provided some context for her rage, but not full absolution.

The challenge for the character's redemption is significant, even for a fanbase generally known for its forgiving nature. While audiences welcomed Wanda Maximoff back after the Westview incident in WandaVision, her later actions in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness tested that goodwill. Jean Grey's path forward will similarly depend on how her future appearances address the moral complexities established in Brand New Day.
