Daijirou Nonoue, creator of "Hatori and Furuta's Extraordinarily Ordinary Life," gave his first English-language interview to Anime Corner.
Daijirou Nonoue, known for his current series "Hatori and Furuta's Extraordinarily Ordinary Life," recently provided his first English-language interview. The mangaka, whose work is currently serialized on Jump+, has previously contributed to Weekly Shonen Jump with titles such as "Mutou Black" and "The Last Saiyuki." This interview offered insight into his creative process and career trajectory.
Born in Okayama, Japan, in 1989, Nonoue frequently changed schools during his childhood. He found that drawing characters from manga and games served as a consistent way to connect with new friends. This early experience naturally led him to consider a career in manga creation, establishing a foundational interest that would shape his future.
During high school, Nonoue joined the art club, aspiring to become a mangaka despite initially struggling with his drawing skills. He recalled being the least proficient among his peers. A turning point came when his art teacher critically assessed his talent, stating he lacked both skill and drive for an art-related profession.
Nonoue acknowledged his artistic limitations but found his passion for manga undiminished. He resolved to compensate for his perceived lack of innate talent through dedicated effort and time. He believes this early realization of his challenges, spurred by his teacher's honesty, was crucial, preventing a later, more difficult confrontation with reality.
Nonoue's commitment began to yield results at age 20, when he received an Honorable Mention at the 33rd JUMP Treasure Newcomer Manga Awards in March 2010 for his work "rhapsody in blow." His early career also included one-shot publications such as "Sajitari" in 2010 and "Ryuu ga Ita Machi" in 2024, demonstrating his continued output.
Prior to his current project, Nonoue serialized two series in Weekly Shonen Jump. "Mutou Black" began in 2013, followed by "The Last Saiyuki" in 2019. These works established his presence within the competitive shonen manga landscape, leading up to his latest serialization on Jump+.
His latest series, "Hatori and Furuta's Extraordinarily Ordinary Life," is currently serialized on Jump+ and is nominated for the 2026 Next Manga Awards. Nonoue confirmed that both Hatori and Furuta are composites of his friends, with their core mindsets developed first, then reinforced with specific traits and themes.
Nonoue aimed for readers to experience the thrill of the extraordinary within the mundane, a concept central to the series' title, particularly in its first chapter. He also discussed the core theme of magic in the everyday, specifically how the transformative power of reading books is depicted literally within the narrative.
