After twelve years on the bench, Hunter X Hunter's two most beloved characters are back.
Chapter 414, fittingly titled "Friends," brings Gon Freecss and Killua Zoldyck back into Yoshihiro Togashi's manga, appearing briefly in its closing pages after being absent since the Succession Contest arc began in 2012.
Their return ties directly to the story's shifting shape. Since coming back from his latest hiatus, Togashi has reworked the death game so that Kurapika can no longer go it alone and must lean on the allies he still has.
That is where his old companions come in. As the chapter frames it, Kurapika still has friends to call on, and Gon and Killua are ready to answer.
The two have moved on in the meantime. Gon is shown setting out on a new journey, while Killua appears to have found peace looking after his younger sister, Alluka.
For a series defined as much by its hiatuses as its story, the reunion is a genuine event, a signal that the arc's endgame may finally be pulling its central cast back together.
