Manga publisher SORAJIMA launched Bessatsu Yosumi, a new physical magazine, discussing its role in print culture.

Manga publisher SORAJIMA recently launched Bessatsu Yosumi, a new physical magazine operating under its Yosumi editorial label. The company stated its intention to create a distinct "place" for specific works and their creators, particularly in an era increasingly dominated by digital platforms, reflecting a deliberate engagement with print media.

SORAJIMA operates with five distinct editorial labels, each possessing its own identity and focus, supported by a team of approximately 60 members. The First label specializes in romance for female audiences, while the Second focuses on battle-driven narratives centered on character growth and personal journeys.

The Third editorial label produces horizontal-format manga, adapting to varied reading environments. The Fourth label, Yosumi, is dedicated to works described as genre-defying and electrifying. A Fifth label is developing content for a new vertical-scroll shonen manga app, "Shonen Stoke," set for release in spring 2027.

The publisher's overarching philosophy, "TO FLOURISH," aims to convey the complexities of human nature accessibly, connecting creators' expressions with engaging entertainment. The launch of Bessatsu Yosumi is seen as a response to a unique moment where the publishing industry faces challenges like market contraction and declining bookstores.

Despite these headwinds, SORAJIMA observes a concurrent surge in independent publishing and the emergence of unique small bookstores. This coexistence of decline and renewed grassroots energy presents an opportunity for engagement, with events like Comitia and independent bookstores signaling potential for renewal in new forms.

Magazines have historically fostered discovery by bundling diverse series, encouraging readers to explore multiple titles beyond their initial interest. They also aid in diversifying voices, providing a platform for new talent or works that might otherwise struggle to find an audience in a crowded market.

While the direct impact on the reader's experience from the decline of magazines may be minimal, their disappearance could lead many creators and editors to leave the manga industry. Magazines have long served as guiding markers, and their absence might deter new talent from entering the field, ultimately diminishing the overall richness of manga.

Regarding financial viability, SORAJIMA does not believe that the presence or absence of a magazine significantly impacts profitability. The company stated that sustaining an enterprise solely through IP business is already challenging. Instead, they emphasize expanding works across multiple layers, building from a strong digital fanbase into print publishing and real-world events.
