Why Naruto Quietly Outclasses the Rest of the Shonen Big Three

Among the trio that defined a generation of Shonen Jump, Naruto's strengths - its central rivalry chief among them - make a strong case for the top spot.

In the endless debate over the Shonen Big Three, Naruto's rivalry-driven storytelling gives it an underrated edge over One Piece and Bleach.

The Big Three - One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach - shared the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump around the same era and set the template for the generation of series that followed. Each brought a distinct world and power system, and the argument over which stands tallest has never truly settled, since it comes down largely to taste.

Even so, each title has clear strengths. One Piece is celebrated for its world-building and Bleach for its visual design and character aesthetics, while Naruto excels in areas the other two tend to leave underdeveloped.

Chief among them is rivalry. Neither Luffy nor Ichigo has a peer positioned as a true equal and foil, whereas the Naruto-Sasuke dynamic sits at the heart of the story. One boy chases vengeance for his clan; the other dreams of becoming Hokage, and their friction pushes both to greater heights.

That relationship drives much of the series' emotional weight, as Sasuke's turn to Orochimaru and Naruto's refusal to give up on him carry through the whole of Shippuden. It is the kind of central, escalating rivalry that helps Naruto stand apart from its famous peers.
